It’s easy to drift though life and just do whatever seems to
come along without really thinking about it. I went to university
because I could, and it was expected of me, and then just took the
best job I was offered because I really had no clear idea of what
I wanted to do. It wasn’t until I was in my early thirties and
a divorce forced me to re-evaluate every area of my life that I would
say I began to live consciously. Eventually, that process led me here
to Triple Moon.
So why are we here? What is life all about? I believe we are on
this earth for two reasons: to evolve ourselves (our higher purpose)
and to serve other people in some way (our life’s work). You
can’t really separate the two as you automatically evolve
when you serve others and as you evolve you automatically want to
serve other people more! These things may not stay the same throughout
your whole life so it’s important to be guided by your higher
self, through your heart, at all times.
Let’s start with how to discover what your life’s work
is. Given that your higher self speaks through your heart, it’s
as simple as asking yourself what skills you have that you enjoy
using. What do you really love to do? What things do you feel naturally
drawn to and what makes you feel happy? Consider what your ideal
job and way of life would be. This is not just wishful thinking
but a way in which your higher self can communicate your potential
and what you came here to do.
Listening to your heart
Once you have decided what your life’s work is, you must make
sure that you then follow your higher purpose by following your
higher self (your heart) who is sending you messages all the time.
When you have a choice to make, go with what you feel drawn to and
would love to do. You should never force yourself to do anything
– if you find yourself thinking “I should” or
“I have to” then you can be sure you’re not hearing
your heart.
Before you do anything, pause a moment to consider how you feel
about the action you’re about to take. If you get a warm,
open, inviting feeling then that’s your higher self telling
you that you’re on the right track. If you feel any kind of
resistance, negativity or a drop in energy then it’s obviously
not the right thing for you to do. Once you start to do this you’ll
quickly realise how much time and wasted effort you can save yourself!
In case you’re thinking it, following your heart is not about
slavishly following your emotions. Rather, it’s about being
able to act in a caring but calm, harmonious manner that’s
not ruled by your intellect.
Head versus heart
“I let my heart rule my head”. We often hear this phrase
and everyone seems to instinctively recognise the opposition between
the two. Your head, your intellectual mind, will try and get in
the way and often urge you to go in a totally opposite direction
to your heart. The table below helps you to work out whether a message
is coming from your head or heart.
| Message from the head is… |
Message from the heart is… |
| Often fear-based. |
Love-based, makes you feel peaceful and balanced. |
| Quick to jump in. |
Often not the first message you hear. |
| Loud and immediate. |
Subtle and quiet. |
| About the lack of something, guilt, or a need to protect yourself
from some imagined threat. |
Encouraging and positive. |
| Sometimes quite drastic and harsh. |
Generally gentle and simple, allowing you to take small steps
at a time. |
| Can separate and divide. |
Unifies and brings together - emotions, thoughts and anxieties. |
| “I should”, “I have to”. |
“I’d love to”, “I feel drawn
to.” |
How do you know you’re on the right
track?
When you’re on the right track things are peaceful, calm and
fairly effortless. Physically you should feel good, healthy and
full of energy. You might hit a few obstacles that test your strength
and dedication but nothing very serious. You feel as if you’re
moving with the flow.
If at any time you feel that you’re on an uphill struggle,
you’re pushing all the time and keep walking into a lot of
brick walls, you’re going the wrong way. You’ll probably
be permanently exhausted too! Stop and take a few minutes to think
about what else you’d like to do. If you don’t feel
clearly that you should be doing anything then it’s probably
better to wait for a while.
This soon becomes a natural process. You’ll notice that certain
activities, objects and thoughts take you away from your heart and
make you feel less connected, less happy. Others bring you closer
to your heart, make you feel happier and more connected to your
own integrity and vitality. As you learn to follow and trust your
higher self, believing that it guides you to the perfect outcomes
for you and your self-development, your connection to your heart
will grow stronger and more consistent.
When your life flows with your heart you will always be following
your higher purpose.
